Four Swedish Soldiers Wounded in Afghan Explosion
November 25 2005 -- Four Swedish soldiers were wounded today when their convoy hit a landmine in northern Afghanistan.
A police spokesman (Jan Durani) in the city of Mazar-i Sharif said the mine was planted after the convoy passed on the way to a sporting event so that on the return trip, the convoy would detonate it. Durani said one of the four soldiers was seriously wounded. Cosimo Argentieri, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, said all four were taken to medical facilities. In Stockholm, the Swedish defense forces confirmed the nationality of the soldiers.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Last month, one British peacekeeper was killed and several ISAF soldiers wounded in an attack in Mazar-i Sharif, which has been relatively quiet since the Taliban movement were chased from the region in late 2001.
