One U.S. Soldier Killed, Two Hurt In Clash With Taliban
Afghanistan 28 February 2006 (RFE/RL) -- One U.S. soldier was killed in fighting between U.S. forces and suspected Taliban rebels in southern Afghanistan today.

The U.S. military said in a statement that two soldiers were also wounded in the clashes. The statement said seven militants were captured during the battle in Uruzgan province. A military vehicle was damaged by a roadside bomb during the fighting.

Violence spiked across southern and eastern Afghanistan last year as militants stepped up their campaign against the country's U.S.-backed government.
