Bush Seeks Aid Increases For Afghanistan, Pakistan
February 6, 2007 -- Afghanistan and Pakistan would see increases in U.S. aid under U.S. President George W. Bush's proposed budget for the 2008 fiscal year.

The Bush administration is recommending an increase in funds to Afghanistan from $968 million to more than $1 billion to help fund drug-eradication programs and improve government operations.

The proposal recommends increasing Pakistan's aid to $785 million.

Bush's request also includes increasing aid to Serbia's Kosovo province to more than $150 million.

Israel and Egypt would remain the top recipients of U.S. aid, under the proposed Bush budget, with Israel receiving $2.4 billion and Egypt $1.7 billion. Iraq would also get well more than $1 billion, reports say.

Bush's requests are contained in the $2.9 trillion spending plan for fiscal 2008 that the president unveiled on February 5.

All the aid proposals could be modified in negotiations with Democratic Party lawmakers who control both chambers of Congress and must approve the budget.
