Afghanistan Welcomes Extra British Troops
KABUL, February 27, 2007 -- British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett arrived in Afghanistan today as President Hamid Karzai welcomed London's pledge to send 1,400 more troops ahead of an expected surge in Taliban unrest.

Beckett is to meet senior Afghan government figures, including Karzai, over the next few days.

A foreign office spokesman said "The purpose of the visit is to underline United Kingdom commitment to Afghanistan in 2007 across the board."

Beckett came to Afghanistan from Pakistan. In Pakistan she said that a failed Iraq would pose as great a risk to international security as Afghanistan did when it was ruled by the Taliban.
