UN Says Timing Pregnancies Can Help Reduce Maternal Deaths In Afghanistan
KABUL, April 23, 2007 -- The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) says the high death rate among Afghan mothers can be reduced by allowing more time to recover between pregnancies.
Speaking in Kabul, agency director and UN Undersecretary-General Thoraya Ahmed Obaid noted that one Afghan woman dies for every 60 births, one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Obaid added that spacing out pregnancies is not against Islamic teaching, and is in fact recommended in the Koran.
