Sarkozy Would Consider Withdrawing French Troops From Afghanistan
PARIS, April 27, 2007 -- Front-running French presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy says that if he's elected, he would consider pulling French troops out of Afghanistan.
Sarkozy, in an interview on French television Thursday (April 26), said he did not believe the long-term presence of French troops in the Afghan region would be "decisive." Some 1,100 French troops are currently serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan. Sarkozy, the candidate of France's governing conservatives, will face Socialist Segolene Royal in the May 6 runoff election.
