Japan Ends Afghan Naval Mission
November 1, 2007 -- Japan's defense minister today ordered Japanese ships supporting U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan to return home after the government failed to strike a deal on extending the mission.
Japan has been supplying fuel to U.S. and other forces operating in Afghanistan under legislation allowing participation in the U.S.-declared "war on terrorism." But that legislation expires today and Japan's opposition, which controls the upper house of parliament, has blocked efforts to approve an extension.
