U.S. Says Afghan Air Strike Targeted Insurgents
WASHINGTON, November 29, 2007 -- The U.S. Defense Department says an air strike in Afghanistan that reportedly killed up to 14 civilian road workers targeted suspected insurgents.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell called the attack a
"legitimate" air strike, saying NATO-led forces acted on "credible intelligence" in launching the attack in eastern Nuristan Province. The U.S. spokesman said no construction equipment was visible in the attack area, and that U.S. officials believe that Abdullah Jan, the western Nuristan Taliban commander, may have been killed in the bombardment.
