Canadian Commission Issues Recommendations On Afghan Mission
January 22, 2008 -- An independent commission in Canada is expected to issue recommendations today on Canada's future in Afghanistan. Reports in Canada have said it is expected that the commission will recommend extending the country's military mission in Afghanistan to 2011. The Canadian mission -- involving some 2,500 troops serving with NATO forces in southern Afghanistan -- is currently due to end in February, 2009. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who appointed the panel last October, supports extending Canada's mission, but opposition parties which control a majority in parliament oppose keeping Canadian forces in a combat zone.
