Kabul, 7 October 2004 -- An Afghan election official said today that the earliest preliminary results from Afghanistan's presidential election on 9 October will be announced on Monday, 11 October.
Sayyed Azam, a spokesman and press secretary for the Joint Commission for Afghan Presidential Elections, made the announcement today in an interview with RFE/RL.
Polling will begin at 7:00 a.m. local time (3:30 a.m. Prague time) and will close at 4:00 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. Prague time), Azam noted. He also said that final election results will be made available two to three weeks after the voting.
Azam told RFE/RL that security arrangements are well organized for the election, with thousands of Afghan police and soldiers working together with international security forces to ensure security.
