16 October 2004 -- Vote counting resumed today in Afghanistan's presidential election after a one-day break to mark the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan on 15 October.
Hundreds of election staff resumed counting votes in Kabul and other election centers across the country.
Some 60,000 votes tallied before the Ramadan break showed transitional leader Hamid Karzai emerging as the clear front-runner, with 72 percent of the vote.
Former Education Minister Mohammad Yunos Qanuni was a distant second with 11 percent of the vote, and Uzbek commander Abdul Rashid Dostum followed with 9 percent.
Final election results are expected by the end of October.
