Mullah Abdul Salam Racketi, who was commander of Military Unit No. 1 in Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan during the Taliban period, won the plurality of the votes in Zabul Province in the south.
Mawlawi Mohammad Nabi Mohammadi, who was served the governor of central Bamiyan Province during in the Taliban regime, secured the second highest number of votes in Samangan Province, north of Bamiyan.
The most prominent member of the ousted regime, former Foreign Minister Mawlawi Wakil Ahmad Mutawakkil, fared very poorly in Kandahar Province, the birthplace of the Taliban movement. AT
